Certification Requirements
Exam applicants must meet the following requirements, in addition to one of the eligibility requirements outlined below. Clinical certification requires some additional criteria, as detailed at the bottom of the page.
All applicants must:
Be at least 18 years of age
Provide proof of current CPR certification
Provide a copy of a U.S. government-issued ID, with your signature (driver's license, ID card or passport)
Name on application must match government-issued ID used

Candidate Requirements
Candidates must be one of the following:
- A graduate of a medical assisting program in the United States within the last five years from a secondary, postsecondary or adult education program in a public school authorized by the Department of Education
- A graduate of a community college program or a postsecondary institution within the last five years accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or approved by the Bureau for Private and Postsecondary Education
Required Documentation
- Certificate of completion or official transcript from an accredited medical assisting course with the application
- Instructor-signed injection/venipuncture statement of proficiency (PDF)
Candidate Requirements
- Currently employed as a medical assistant under the supervision of a physician (MD/DO/DPM)
OR
- Working as an administrative medical assistant in the United States

Candidate Requirements
- At least two years of previous employment comparable to full time (4,160 hours) within the last five years as a medical assistant in the United States

- Employer-signed injection/venipuncture statement of proficiency (PDF)
Candidate Requirements
- Current employment as a medical assisting instructor in an accredited institution in the United States
Required Documentation
- Verification of employment (e.g, current pay stub)
- Statement of proficiency signed by the medical program director (PDF)
Candidate Requirements
- Member of the United States military with relevant training or either separated from the military within the last year or served in that capacity for at least two of the previous five years

- Copy of DD214 or proof of current military employment
- Commanding officer-signed injection/venipuncture statement of proficiency (PDF)
Clinical Certification
Applicants taking the clinical exam must meet the following requirements:
Candidate Requirements
Candidates are required to have:
- 10 clock hours of training in administering injections and performing skin tests and/or 10 clock hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture for the purpose of withdrawing blood, demonstrating satisfactory performance in at least 10 (each) each of intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injections, 10 skin tests and/or at least 10 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
This training as required in Section 1366.1 of California Medical Assistant Regulations may be administered by a licensed physician or podiatrist, a registered nurse, licensed vocations nurse, or physician assistant. Training may also be administered by a qualified instructor in an accredited medical assisting program. The Medical Assisting Instructor shall certify in writing the place and date such training was administered, the successful completion of each task, shall sign the certification and maintain the training log.
