If you’d like to recertify by the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) option, you must earn 60 CEU credits during the five-year period preceding your application. One contact hour (60 minutes of classroom instruction) equals one credit.
Credits must be earned in the basic, administrative or clinical categories and fall within the scope of practice for a medical assistant as defined by the Medical Board of California. Final acceptance of credits and categories will be determined by the recertification department.
Candidates must complete a recertification application prior to submitting their credits.
There are many ways to obtain credits. The Board does not restrict where you get your continuing educational training. However, we do require that all training be within the scope of practice for a California Certified Medical Assistant.
We offer a one-year grace period to allow those who are missing required credits to comply. This grace period is a courtesy extended to you by our Board and may not be recognized by your employer. Your certification is no longer active during this period. Failure to submit the required credits within this grace period will result in you having to retest and pay a $50 reactivation fee.
Review Process & Results
The review process can take 30-45 days from submission of a completed application. If recertification is deferred, we will contact you regarding missing documentation. You are encouraged to start the recertification process 3-6 months prior to the end of the current active date.
When recertification is granted, you will receive a wallet card and a seal which can be attached to your original certificate. If you need a replacement certificate, wallet card or pin, please contact us.
